Deaf Person of the Month
Dr. Nancy Hlibok Amann
CSDR’s 7th Superindentent
When Dr. Nancy Hlibok Amann arrived at California School for the Deaf, Riverside, on July 1, 2016, she was astounded by the welcome she received—a large crowd of students, families, alumni, and supporters were there to greet her. School wasn't in session, so the gathering was informal. It was, literally, a red-carpet event, an expression of love, esteem, and optimism.
Dr. Amann comes from one of the Deaf community's best-known and celebrated families. She earned her B.A. in Government and M.S. in Administration from Gallaudet University, and her Ph.D. in Language, Reading, and Culture from University of Arizona. Her most recent positions were Assistant Superintendent of Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind, then Director of Special Projects and Development at Deaf Community Services of San Diego, Inc., then as a high-school teacher in the San Diego School District.
She reports to the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the same department that has jurisdiction over California School for the Deaf, Fremont. You can be sure that we'll be "reading" good things from CSDF and CSDR.
